ACTIVE BIOTERRORISM INSIDE USA

Some deadly organisms 'missing'

There have been over 100 accidents, including missing shipments, concerning the US labs handling the world's deadliest germs and toxins.

No casualty was reported, however the documented cases reflect poorly supervised high-security labs, some of which work with organisms and poisons that can cause illnesses with no cure, AP reported on Tuesday.

Since 2003 the American laboratories have experienced various accidents. Workers bitten or scratched by infected animals, skin cuts, needle sticks and more: there are also reports on accidents involving anthrax, bird flu virus, monkeypox and plague-causing bacteria at 44 labs in 24 states.

The number of accidents has risen steadily as more labs do the work. Through August, labs reported 36 accidents and lost shipments during 2007 -nearly double the number reported during all of 2004.

"It may be only a matter of time before our nation has a public health incident with potentially catastrophic results," said a GAO (Government Accountability Office) official.

Meanwhile experts found something much graver than just 'accidents' to fear: the possibility of stealing such organisms or toxins and using them for bioterrorism.
